Ahmad ibn Hibata Allah ibn Tāj al-Umanaaʾ narrated to us; he said: Muhammad ibn Ṣāʿid ibn Saʿid al-Tūsī related to us; my father related to us; ʿUmar ibn Abī al-Ḥasan, the ḥāfiẓ, related to us; Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥīm al-Naysābūrī related to us; Abū al-Ḥusayn al-Khaffāf related to us; Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Sarrāj related to us; Qutaybah related to us; Abū ʿAwānah, from Qatādah, from Anas, related:
“Indeed, the Prophet ﷺ was the one who prayed in the lightest fashion of all people, yet with perfect completion.”
We also transmitted it with a higher chain from Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Salām and Ahmad ibn Hibata Allah, from ʿAbd al-Muʿizz ibn Muhammad. Muhammad ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us; Muḥallim ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us; al-Khalīl ibn Aḥmad narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Isḥāq al-Sarrāj narrated to us … and he mentioned the same report.
This is an authentic ḥadith; Muslim (1) recorded it through the narration of Qutaybah ibn Saʿid. It indicates that it is recommended to make the prayer light while still fulfilling its obligatory pillars and recommended elements. It has been estimated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would remain in prostration for about ten tasbīḥāt (2).
