Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

He heard from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥamdān al-Naṣrawī, Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Muzakkī, Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥārith al-Tamīmī, and Abū Ḥassān Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Jaʿfar, as well as those who came after them. Scarcely a single fascicle existed that he had not heard, and, so far as I know, he never undertook a formal journey in quest of knowledge.

Those who received hadith from him include Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr al-Sinjī, ʿUmar Abū Shujāʿ al-Biṣṭāmī, ʿAbd al-Raḥīm ibn al-Ikhwah, and others.

He died in Dhuʾl-Ḥijjah of the year 556 AH, when he was, as I reckon, in his ninety-odd years. His father, Abū al-ʿAbbās, was among the scholars of his time, and he left two sons—Abū Bakr Muḥammad and Aḥmad—both transmitters of hadith.

179 — al-Qushayrī, Abū Muḥammad al-Faḍl ibn Muḥammad*

The shaykh, the scholar, the reliable authority: Abū Muḥammad al-Faḍl ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd ibn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Mahdī al-Qushayrī of Nīshāpūr, known as al-Muʿaddal, the Ṣūfī.

He heard hadith from the distinguished ʿAbd al-Qāhir al-Baghdādī, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥamdān al-Naṣrawī, Abū Ḥassān al-Muzakkī, and ʿAbd al-Ghāfir al-Fārisī. He was the brother of ʿUbayd al-Qushayrī.

When he performed the pilgrimage, he narrated in Baghdad; Abū ʾl-Fatḥ Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Salām the scribe and others transmitted from him.

He passed away in Ramadan of the year 506 AH at the age of eighty-six. He was righteous, virtuous, of dignified bearing, and counted among the leading notables of Nīshāpūr.
