The Battle against Musaylima the Liar
Ibn Lahiʿah related—through Abū al-Aswad—from ʿUrwah:
Khalid marched toward al-Yamāmah to confront Musaylima. Musaylima advanced with his masses and camped at ʿAfrā, on the very edge of al-Yamāmah, and Khalid descended upon them there. They placed all their possessions behind the camp and the fertile lands of al-Yamāmah at their backs.
Shurahbīl ibn Salamah exhorted his people, saying, “O Banū Hanīfah, today is the day of honour! If you are routed today, the women will be carried off as captives and taken as wives without choice. Fight, then, for your lineage!”
They fought at ʿAfrā with fierce intensity. The Muslims wavered, and some men of Banū Hanīfah burst into Khalid’s pavilion, where the captive Mujāʿah and Umm Tamīm, Khalid’s wife, were sitting. They sought to kill her, but Mujāʿah declared, “She is under my protection,” and shielded her.
When Thābit ibn Qays saw the Muslims turning back he cried, “Fie upon you and what you are doing!” The Muslims rallied, and God put the enemy to flight. A band of Muslims then entered Khalid’s pavilion and wanted to kill Mujāʿah, but Umm Tamīm swore, “By God, he shall not be killed,” and granted him sanctuary.
The enemies of God fled until they reached Ḥadīqat al-Mawt (the Garden of Death). There they made their stand and the fighting became still more savage. Muhakkam ibn al-Tufayl shouted, “O Banū Hanīfah, enter the garden; I will protect your rear!” He fought on their behalf for a while and was killed. Musaylima urged his men, “My people, fight for your honour!” The struggle intensified, and Musaylima was slain by Wahshī, the freedman of Banū Nawfal.
Al-Mawqarī transmitted from al-Zuhrī: Khalid fought Musaylima and those with him from Banū Hanīfah, who on that day were the most numerous and formidable of the Arabs. Many Muslims fell as martyrs, but God routed Banū Hanīfah and Musaylima was killed—Wahshī ran him through with a spear.
People used to say: Wahshī killed both the best man on earth after the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, and the worst man on earth.
