- The Lord of the West, Abū Yaʿqūb Yūsuf ibn Tāshfīn*
He was the Commander of the Muslims, the Sultan, Abū Yaʿqūb Yūsuf ibn Tāshfīn al-Lamṭūnī, a Berber of the Veiled clan. He was also known as the Commander of the Murābiṭūn, and it was he who built Marrakesh and made it the seat of his rule.
The first appearance of these “Veiled Ones” (4) was with Abū Bakr ibn ʿUmar al-Lamṭūnī, who seized the territories from Tlemcen to the far western edge of the world. He appointed Ibn Tāshfīn as his deputy, whereupon Yūsuf emerged as a gallant, brave, magnanimous, just, and awe-inspiring hero. He laid out Marrakesh in the year 465 AH,

(4) They were called al-mulathimin (“the veiled ones”) because they always kept their faces covered and never unveiled, a custom they inherited generation after generation. One view traces the practice to the Himyarites, who veiled themselves against extreme heat and cold; what began among the elite spread until it became general. These people, descended from Himyar b. Sabaʾ, owned horses, camels and sheep, dwelt in the southern deserts between the Berber lands and the Sudan, and moved from one watering place to another like the Arabs, living in tents of hair and camel-wool. The first to unite them, spur them to fight and instil in them the hope of conquering lands was the jurist ʿAbd Allah b. Yasin; he was killed in a battle against the Barghawata. He was succeeded by Abu Bakr b. ʿUmar al-Sanhaji, a cousin of Yusuf b. Tashfin, who appointed him over the mulathimin, and subsequent events followed their well-known course.
