151 – al-Sanjabastī, Abū al-Qāsim Ismāʿīl ibn al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī—
judge, imām, specialist in the laws of inheritance, long-lived, and the chief transmitter of Khurāsān—Abū al-Qāsim Ismāʿīl ibn al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn Ḥamdūn al-Khurāsānī, known as al-Sanjabastī ⦗1⦘.
He was born, approximately—or according to some, certainly—in 410 AH.
He heard hadith from Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Ḥayrī, Abū Saʿīd al-Ṣayrafī, and Abū ʿAlī al-Balkhī. He enjoyed a remarkably long life, uniting grandchildren with their grandfathers, and he came from a family of standing and dignity.
Those who narrated from him include Abū Bakr al-Samʿānī, Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Sinjī, Abū Shujāʿ ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad al-Bisṭāmī, the preacher Muḥammad ibn Ḥusayn, Abū al-Futūḥ al-Ṭāʾī, and a number of others.
ʿAbd al-Ghāfir ibn Ismāʿīl pronounced him reliable. He used to leave his village to transmit hadith in Naysābūr; the village lies a single day’s journey from the city.
He died in Sanjabast in Ṣafar 506 AH, having entered his hundredth year.
In the same year there also died: Abū Ghālib Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn al-Qāriʾ, the upright ⦗2⦘; the muḥaddith Abū al-Faḍl al-ʿAbbās ibn Aḥmad al-Shaqqānī al-Naysābūrī ⦗3⦘; and al-Faḍl ibn
