Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

He was the brother of King Ilghazi. The two brothers were appointed governors of Jerusalem after their father (1). Ibn Badr, the commander-in-chief (2), pressed them hard and took the city from them a few months before the Franks captured it; so they withdrew and occupied Diyār Bakr (3).

Suqmān died near Tripoli in 498 AH. Mardin, both then and now, has remained in the hands of his descendants.

It is said that Ibn ʿAmmār (4) summoned him to help against the Franks, and that the ruler of Damascus fell ill and was ready to hand the city over to him. Suqmān therefore set out for Damascus to take possession of it and then campaign against the Franks, but he died at al-Khawāniq. His body was brought back and buried at Ḥiṣn Kīfā (5).
