140 – al-Shaʿbī, Abū al-Muṭarrif ʿAbd al-Raḥīm ibn Qāsim
The senior Mālikī authority, Abū al-Muṭarrif ʿAbd al-Raḥīm ibn Qāsim al-Shaʿbī, from Málaga, the muftī of his city.
He heard ḥadith from Qāsim al-Maʾmūnī in Almería and from Abū al-Ḥasan ibn ʿĪsā al-Māliqī; he also held an ijāzah from Yūnus ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Shuʿayth and from others.
Those who transmitted from him include Abū ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sulaymān and others.
He served as qāḍī of his hometown, after which its emir Tamīm imprisoned him over a certain report. When Ibn Tāshfīn assumed power, he invited him to take up the judgeship again, but he declined and recommended Abū Marwān ibn Ḥassūn, who thereafter would not finalize any matter without consulting him. He lived a long life, and his reputation spread far and wide.
He died in Rajab of the year 497 AH, at the age of ninety-five.
He and Ibn al-Ṭallāʿ (2) passed away on the same Friday.
