Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

I add: He transmitted ḥadith in Baghdad and in Kūfah, and it was there that he passed away in Jumādā al-Ākhirah, 499 AH.

128 – al-Ṭabarī (a different scholar) Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh*
The distinguished scholar and Shāfiʿī muftī, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Ṭabarī, nicknamed al-Ḥājjī and al-Bazzāzī.

He came to Baghdad while still a boy, settled there, and studied jurisprudence under the judge Abū al-Ṭayyib. He heard ḥadith from him and from al-Jawharī, and he kept close to Shaykh Abū Isḥāq until he had mastered the school, its principles, and the discipline of legal disputation. He gave legal testimony before Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Dāmghānī and taught at the Niẓāmiyyah in 483 AH. A few months later ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn Muḥammad al-Fāmī al-Shīrāzī arrived, and it was agreed that the chair of instruction would be shared between them. They taught together for quite some time, but were dismissed when al-Ghazālī was appointed. When al-Ghazālī performed the ḥajj in 488 AH and then went to Syria for an extended absence, al-Ṭabarī assumed the professorship of the Niẓāmiyyah in Ṣafar 489 AH. Three years later he left Baghdad for Isfahān to reclaim deposits he had stored there.

Only a small number of reports were related from him, among them by Hibat Allāh ibn al-Saqaṭī.

He died in Shaʿbān, 495 AH, in Isfahān—may Allah show him mercy.
