“O Muhammad, rouse yourself from your heedlessness and your drowsiness. (1)”
I add: A considerable number transmitted from him, among them: Abu Jaʿfar al-Batrugi; Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Khaliq al-Khazraji; Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Khalil al-Qaysi, a resident of Marrakesh who lived until 570 AH; and ʿAli ibn Hunayn—between him and Malik in the chain of the Muwaṭṭaʾ are four transmitters, and between him and al-Nasaʾi in the latter’s Great Sunan (2) are two.
He died in Rajab of the year 497 AH, as dated by Ibn Bashkuwal.
(1) The Christian king al-Adfunsh (Alfonso) asked al-Muʿtamid ibn ʿAbbād to let the king’s wife enter the Great Mosque of Cordoba so that she might give birth in a spot on its western side that the Christians especially revered, and to house her in Madinat al-Zahra, west of the city. A Jewish envoy carried the request. Al-Muʿtamid refused; when the envoy repeated the demand he still declined and dismissed him. The Jew returned once more, spoke to the ruler with offensive bluntness, and uttered words Ibn ʿAbbād could not tolerate. The latter seized an inkwell that lay before him, struck the envoy on the head, forcing his brains down his throat, and ordered him to be crucified upside-down in Cordoba. After his anger abated, he consulted the jurists about the legal ruling on what he had done. The biographee, Muhammad ibn al-Faraj, immediately issued a dispensation, arguing that the envoy had overstepped the limits of diplomacy and thereby incurred capital punishment. The jurists added that he had hastened to give this fatwa lest al-Muʿtamid lose heart in confronting the enemy, hoping that God would make his resolve a means of relief for the Muslims. For the full account see al-Maqari, Nafh al-Tib, 4:358-359.
(2) See Barnamaj al-Wadi Ashi, p. 197, and Ibn Khayr’s Fihrist, p. 110—the latter of which has been printed only in one fascicle edited by ʿAbd al-Samad Sharaf al-Din. A complete manuscript, transmitted by the Andalusians Ibn al-Ahmar and Ibn Sayyar, is kept in the Mulla Murad Library in Istanbul. The edition most commonly circulated today is al-Mujtaba, a selection prepared by his pupil Abu Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sunnī. Ibn al-Athir, author of Jamiʿ al-Usul, was mistaken when, in his notice on al-Nasaʾi, he claimed that al-Mujtaba was compiled and sifted by al-Nasaʾi himself at the request of a certain emir, and that every hadith in it is sound; several later scholars repeated this error, accepting the collection’s contents uncritically. In fact, al-Mujtaba contains a fair number of reports that al-Nasaʾi and other leading hadith critics judged weak, while the original larger work by al-Nasaʾi also holds many authentic hadiths that never found their way into Ibn al-Sunnī’s selection.
