Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

He also heard from Abū Muḥammad ibn al-Walīd, an eloquent preacher and grammarian who held the offices of mufti and Friday-orator in Ceuta under the Barghwāṭī regime. Endowed with dignity and authority, he taught al-Mudawwana and many people transmitted from him.

Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ said: My two maternal uncles, Abū ʿAbd Allah (1) and Abū Muḥammad—the sons of al-Jawzī—together with ʿAbbūd ibn Saʿīd the judge and Abū Isḥāq ibn Jaʿfar, all studied with him.

He died in 491 AH.

His brother was Abū al-Ḥasan, the mufti of Tangier, ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-Malik.

Abū al-Ḥasan had two sons:

  1. ʿAbd Allah, who served first as judge of Granada and later of Tlemcen.
  2. The judge of Meknasa, the jurist ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, father of the judge of Tlemcen in 530 AH, Abū (2) al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān.

Marwān himself had several sons who became leading scholars. Among them were: the judge of Tangier ʿAbd al-Khāliq; then ʿAbd al-Wahhāb, also judge of Tangier and noted for his integrity; third, the polymath ʿAbd al-Razzāq, judge of Jaén; and fourth, the judge ʿAbd al-Munʿim, who held the judiciary of Meknasa, then Almería, then Seville, after which he asked to be relieved and was transferred to Granada.

Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ mentions all of them but does not record their dates of death.
