109 – Sharaf al-Mulk Abū Saʿd Muḥammad ibn Manṣūr al-Khwārazmī **
The eminent minister, the illustrious Abū Saʿd Muḥammad ibn Manṣūr al-Khwārazmī, the secretary,
… – Abu al-Harith ibn Abi al-Fadl al-Sarakhsi. I was sitting at the very end of his circle; when a question was raised I spoke and voiced an objection. When my turn came again, he beckoned me, brought me close until I sat beside him, rose with me and counted me among his regular students. Joy overwhelmed me. The second memorable favour occurred when I became entitled to lean back in the seat of our shaykh Abu Ishaq, may Allah have mercy on him; that is the greatest of blessings and the fullest share.

(1) Ibn Khallikan (6/267) reports that the immediate cause of his embracing Islam was Abu Ali ibn al-Walid the Mu‘tazili.
(2) Ibn Khallikan also notes that in this epistle he praised Islam, marshalled proofs that it is the true religion, cited from the Torah and the Gospel the predictions of the Prophet—peace be upon him—showing that he was a Divinely-sent messenger, and stated that Jews and Christians concealed this information. He then enumerated the faults of both communities. It is an excellent treatise in which he performed admirably.
