Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

He was born in 432 AH. A mufti of the Shāfiʿī school, he answered legal questions that reached him from far-flung lands. A reliable and firmly grounded scholar, he was taken captive when the enemy seized Jerusalem. They demanded a great quantity of gold for his ransom, but none was forthcoming, so they killed him with stones at al-Batharun (1) on the twelfth of Shawwāl, 492 AH. He was seventy years old, plus some months.
They slaughtered in Jerusalem nearly seventy thousand people, and the city remained in their grasp for ninety years (2).

(1) The base manuscript reads so; in al-Dhahabi’s Tadhkirat al-huffaz the place appears as “Bayrut,” which is most likely a scribal error. Yaqut’s Geographical Dictionary gives it as Bathrun (with the first two consonants vocalised), a fortress lying between Jubayl and Anfah on the Syrian coast. Tadhkirat al-huffaz also reports that he was executed deliberately outside Antioch. Abu al-Fadl Muhammad b. Nasir relates that he resided in Jerusalem, teaching Shafi‘i law and transmitting hadith, until the Franks seized the city; an eye-witness told him that the man used to charge at them, drive them from the mosque, and kill some of them, until he himself fell as a martyr in 490 AH/1097 CE. (2) Once the Muslims resolved to confront their enemies and regain what had been taken from them, they set aside their quarrels, united their ranks, turned to God with sincere hearts, implored His help, and fought in His cause shoulder to shoulder like a solid structure, making the best use of the means available to them. When they did so, God granted them victory, delivered their foes into their hands, and Jerusalem was retaken in 583 AH/1187 CE under the leadership of the Muslim sultan Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi. The magnanimity and high morals displayed by the victors—foremost among them Salah al-Din—left a profound impression on their adversaries; even their own historians praised them. The historian Runciman writes: “The victorious Muslims became renowned for rectitude and humanity. Whereas the Franks, eighty-eight years earlier, had waded in their victims’ blood, not a single house was looted now, nor was anyone harmed. On Salah al-Din’s orders, police patrols roamed the streets and gates to prevent any assault on Christians.” A poet captured the contrast: We ruled, and clemency was our inborn trait; / When you held power, the valley ran with blood. The student of history will observe that God’s way with the Muslim community is constant: when they rise above their differences, rally beneath the banner of Islam, submit their lives to God, and follow His laws, He grants them striking victories, makes them heirs to the earth, and firmly establishes their religion.
