ibn Aḥmad al-Anṣārī, originally of Herat and later known as al-Sarawī. His father married among the people of Sarāt Banī Shabābah and stayed there for a period after coming from Mecca, so ʿĪsā was born there in 415 AH.
He received a large body of transmissions from his father, from Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Ṣanʿānī, and from several others.
Those who narrated from him include Abū al-Tawfīq Masʿūd ibn Saʿīd, Abū ʿUbayd Niʿmat Allāh ibn Ziyādat Allāh al-Ghifārī, Maymūn ibn Yāsīn al-Murābiṭ—who purchased from him the autograph copy of his father’s Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī—ʿAlī ibn ʿAmmār al-Makkī, and others, as well as al-Silafī by written authorization. Al-Silafī said, “He and I met at the standing in ʿArafāt in the year seven (507 AH) when I performed the pilgrimage. We agreed to hear from him in the Sacred Mosque, but he hurried off with the first departure (al-nafr al-awwal) (1) to al-Sarāt.”
I say: After 497 AH no further news of him reached us; he had moved on to Allah.
