Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

He transmitted ḥadith from his uncle Abū al-Fatḥ Aḥmad ibn ʿUbayd Allah, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn Baḥshal, from al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar al-Ṣayrafī, and from others besides them.

Those who received ḥadith from him include Ismāʿīl ibn Muḥammad al-Naysābūrī while in the Ḥijāz, Marwān ibn ʿAlī al-Ṭanzī in Diyār Bakr, Abū al-Muʿammar al-Mubārak ibn Aḥmad al-Anṣārī, Abū ʿAbd Allah ibn Khusraw al-Balkhī, Abū Ṭāhir al-Silafī, Wajīh al-Shaḥḥāmī, and others.

I mention him here only because of his notoriety. I have already discussed him in al-Mīzān (1) and stated that he is neither reliable nor trustworthy.

Ibn al-Najjār said: ʿAlī ibn Mukhtār informed us, the Silafī informed us, Abū Naṣr ibn Wadʿān in Baghdad informed us, my uncle informed us, Naṣr ibn Aḥmad the Murjiʾī informed us, Abū Yaʿlá al-Tamīmī narrated to us, ʿAbd Allah ibn Bakkār narrated to us, Muḥammad ibn Thābit narrated to us, Jabalah ibn ʿAṭiyyah narrated to us, from Isḥāq ibn ʿAbd Allah, from Kurayb, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:

“I was a guest of my aunt Maymūnah, and on that night she was not praying. The Prophet ﷺ arrived after he had performed the last night prayer (ʿIshāʾ), came to the bed, took a cloth that lay at its head and wrapped it round his waist, removed his two garments and hung them up, then lay down with her. When the last part of the night came, he went to a waterskin that was hanging, untied it and performed ablution from it. I thought to get up and pour the water for him, but I disliked that he should realize I was awake. Then he took his garments, went to the mosque and began to pray. I rose, performed ablution, went to him and stood on his left. He reached back, took me by the hand and set me to his right. He prayed—and I prayed with him—thirteen rakʿahs. Then he sat down and I sat beside him; he inclined his cheek toward mine until…"
