Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

ibn ʿAwf al-Muzanī, Ibn Sulwān al-Māzinī, and others of their rank; he also heard from Hibat Allah ibn Sulaymān and from many besides.

In Ṣūr (Tyre) he studied under the jurist Sulaym al-Rāzī.

In Gaza he learned from Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar al-Mīmāsī, from whom he received the Muwaṭṭaʾ.

In Jerusalem he narrated from Abū al-Qāsim ʿUmar ibn Aḥmad al-Wāsiṭī, Abū al-ʿAzāʾim Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Gharrāʾ al-Baṣrī, Abū al-Faraj ʿUbayd Allah ibn Muḥammad al-Marāghī the grammarian, Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Bashnawī the Sufi, and several others.

In Miyāfāriqīn he heard from Abū al-Ṭayyib Salāmah ibn Isḥāq al-Āmidī; he likewise received traditions from Abū ʿAlī al-Ahwāzī the Qur’an-reciter, and from ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Barhān al-Ghazzāl, whom he met in Ṣūr.

From Mecca he was granted an ijāza by Abū Dharr ʿAbd ibn Aḥmad al-Harawī; from Baghdad, by the judge Abū al-Ṭayyib; and from Ṣaydā, by al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Jumayʿ and a number of others.

He compiled the book al-Ḥujja ʿalā Tārik al-Maḥajja (1), and he dictated hadith sessions

(321) See Mushtabih al-Muallif, 2:418, and Ibn Nasir al-Din al-Dimashqi, Tawdih al-Mushtabih, 2:122. (1) This book sets out the fundamentals of faith according to the principles of the people of hadith and the sunnah. From it Imam al-Nawawi quoted, in his Forty Hadiths, the narration of Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As: “None of you truly believes until his desire is in accord with what I have brought.” Al-Nawawi added: “We have transmitted it in Kitab al-Hujja with a sound chain.” Al-Hafiz Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali objected in Jami al-Ulum wa-l-Hikam, p. 364, arguing that authenticating this hadith is highly unlikely for several reasons. One: the report is unique to Nuaim ibn Hammad al-Marwazi. Although a number of leading scholars considered him reliable and al-Bukhari cited him, the hadith authorities initially thought well of him because of his firmness in the sunnah and his harsh refutation of the people of innovation, yet they also observed that he was suspected of error and confusion in some narrations; once his many anomalies came to light, they judged him weak. Two: there is inconsistency in the chain he provides. It is reported from him “from al-Thaqafi, from Hisham,” and also “from al-Thaqafi: some of our teachers told us, Hisham—or someone else—told us.” In this latter wording the shaykh al-Thaqafi is unidentified. It is likewise narrated from al-Thaqafi, “Some of our teachers told us, Hisham …"
