Muḥammad ibn al-Sāʾib—who is deemed unreliable—narrated from Abū Ṣāliḥ, the client of Umm Hāniʾ, that Fāṭimah once entered upon Abū Bakr and said, “Abū Bakr, if you were to die today, who would inherit from you?” He replied, “My wife and my children.”
She responded, “Then why do you inherit from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to the exclusion of his wife and children?” He said, “Daughter of the Messenger of Allah, I have not done that.”
She retorted, “Indeed you have: you laid hands on Fadak, which had been set aside exclusively for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and you have withheld from us the share that Allah revealed.” He answered, “I did not. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed me that Allah grants a prophet a provision (ṭuʿmah) while he is alive, but when He takes him, that provision is withdrawn.” She said, “You and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ know best; I shall not question you again after this sitting.”
Ibn Fuḍayl narrated from al-Walīd ibn Jumayʿ, from Abū al-Ṭufayl, who said: When the Prophet ﷺ passed away, Fāṭimah sent word to Abū Bakr, asking, “Are you the heir of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, or is it his family?” He replied, “No; rather, it is his family.” She asked, “Then where is his allotted share?” He said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘When Allah grants a prophet a provision (ṭuʿmah) and then takes him, He assigns it to the one who succeeds him,’ so I deemed it proper to return it to the Muslims.” She replied, “You and what you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ know best.”
Aḥmad recorded this report in his Musnad, but it is considered munkar, the most objectionable element being the statement: “No; rather, it is his family.”
Al-Walīd ibn Muslim and ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid said: Ṣadaqah Abū Muʿāwiyah narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Bakr al-Ṣiddīq, from Yazīd al-Raqāshī, from Anas, that Fāṭimah came to Abū Bakr and said, “You know the charitable estates that the members of the Household left behind.” She then recited to him: “And know that whatever spoils you take as booty, one-fifth of it belongs to Allah and to the Messenger…” (al-Anfāl 8:41), and so on.
