Ḥammād ibn Salamah.
Muslim likewise recorded it (1) through the route of Ibn ʿUlayyah and others, from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz.
Among al-Humaydī’s verses are these:
The path of renunciation is the finest path to tread,
and fearing Allah is to discharge all rights.
So trust in Allah—He will suffice you; seek His aid—He will help you;
leave, my son, the paltry byways of the road. (2)
He also said:
Meeting people yields no benefit
except senseless prattle, talk upon talk.
So limit your encounters with men, unless
it be to gain knowledge or to set affairs aright. (3)
And he said:
The Book of Allah is my doctrine,
and the authenticated reports are my religion.
Whatever the whole community agreed upon, first and last,
is manifest truth indeed.
So shun whatever diverts from these and embrace them;
you will stand upon the eye of certainty. (4)
64 – The ruler of Samarqand, Khan Aḥmad
He was a tyrannical renegade. The amirs rose against him, seized him, and convened a tribunal in which they alleged that he was a zindīq (heretic) (5). He denied the charge, so they produced witnesses against him.
