The matter of Abū Bakr and Fāṭimah (may Allah be pleased with her):
Al-Zuhrī reported—through ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah—that after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had passed away, Fāṭimah asked Abū Bakr to allocate to her the inheritance due from the property that Allah had bestowed upon His Messenger. He answered, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘We are not to be inherited from; whatever we leave behind is charity.’” She became angry and avoided Abū Bakr until she herself died.
The Prophet’s wives then sent ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān to Abū Bakr, requesting their share of the inheritance from what Allah had granted His Messenger, but I was the one who turned them back. I said to them, “Will you not fear Allah? Did you not hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘We are not inherited from; whatever we leave is charity; only the family of Muḥammad may subsist on this property’?”
Abū al-Zinād related—from al-Aʿraj, from Abū Hurayrah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “My heirs shall not divide a single dinar. Whatever I leave, after providing for my wives and paying the wage of my agent, is charity.”
