Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān informed us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad the jurist informed us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Bāqī informed us; Aḥmad ibn Khayrūn informed us; ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Muḥammad informed us; Aḥmad ibn Khuzaymah informed us; Aḥmad ibn ʿUbayd Allāh al-Narsī narrated to us; Ḥajjāj ibn Muḥammad narrated to us. He said:
Ibn Jurayj said: I heard ʿAṭāʾ say: I heard Ibn ʿAbbās say:
I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “If the son of Adam possessed a valley full of wealth, he would love to have another one like it. Nothing fills the son of Adam’s insides except dust, yet Allah accepts the repentance of whoever repents.”
Ibn ʿAbbās added, “I do not know whether this is from the Quran or not.”
Muslim related it from Zuhayr, from Ḥajjāj.⦗1⦘
(1) Hadith no. 1049 in the Book of Zakat, chapter: “If the son of Adam possessed two valleys (of riches) he would seek a third.” It is also reported by al-Bukhari, nos. 6436–6437, in the Book of Heart-Softening Narrations, and by Ahmad, 1/370, through several chains traced back to Ibn Jurayj. أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيْلُ بنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ: أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بنُ أَحْمَدَ الفَقِيْهُ، أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بنُ عبد البَاقِي، أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بنُ خَيْرُوْنَ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ المَلِكِ بنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بنُ خُزَيْمَة، حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بنُ عُبيد الله النَّرْسِيّ، حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالَ:
قَالَ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ: سَمِعْتُ عَطَاءً يَقُوْلُ: سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ يَقُوْلُ:
سَمِعْتُ رَسُوْلَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُوْلُ: (لَوْ أَنَّ لابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِياً مِنْ مَالٍ، لأَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكُوْنَ لَهُ إِلَيْهِ مِثْلُهُ، وَلاَ يَمْلأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلاَّ التُّرَابُ، وَاللهُ يَتُوْبُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ) .
قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: فَلاَ أَدْرِي أَمِنَ القُرْآن هُوَ أُمْ لاَ؟
رَوَاهُ مُسْلِم عَنْ زُهَيْر، عَنْ حَجَّاج (١) .
