(2) In Al-Ansab (5/276) the name is garbled as “al-Sirafi,” and in Tabaqat al-Subki (5/298) as “al-Sharabi.” The correct form is “al-Sharafi,” one of al-Samani’s teachers. Al-Samani profiles him in al-Tahbir, 1/390-391, noting that he died at the beginning of Rajab 544 A.H. in Banj Deh. “Banj Deh” is Persian for “the Five Villages,” a cluster of five adjacent hamlets near Marw al-Rudh, later counted within Khurasan. Yaqut reports that the settlement expanded until the five villages merged into a single town, whereas each had once been separate. I left it in 617 A.H., before the Tatars overran Khurasan and slaughtered its people; it was then among the region’s most flourishing cities. Its subsequent fate is unknown. The name is sometimes Arabised as “Fanj Deh,” and the nisba formed from it is Fanjdehi. Al-Samani (5/178) also uses the nisba Khumqari, derived from “the Five Villages,” and lists them as Aivan, Marast, Madu, Karikan, and Bahuna; the toponym is also shortened to Bandahi.
