Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

and the Friday sermon was delivered in his name from the borders of China to the farthest limits of Syria, and from the Byzantine dominions down to Yemen. He then marched on Aleppo, seized it, and the whole world submitted to him.

35 – Al-Muʿtamid ibn ʿAbbād, Muḥammad son of al-Muʿtaḍid bi-llāh, grandson of al-Ẓāfir bi-llāh — lord of al-Andalus, known as al-Muʿtamid ʿalā-llāh, Abū al-Qāsim Muḥammad, son of King al-Muʿtaḍid bi-llāh Abū ʿAmr ʿAbbād, grandson of al-Ẓāfir bi-llāh Abū al-Qāsim, at first qadi of Seville and later its ruler, Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl ibn Quraysh al-Lakhmī.

It is said that he was descended from al-Nuʿmān ibn al-Mundhir, lord of al-Ḥīrah.

Al-Muʿtamid governed the two cities of Córdoba and Seville. His family originated in Greater Syria, from the town of al-ʿArīsh. Abū al-Walīd Ismāʿīl ibn Quraysh entered al-Andalus, where the qadi excelled in jurisprudence, assumed the judiciary, and then ruled for a time. After him his son al-Muʿtaḍid took over, administering the realm from Seville; the people swore allegiance to him as king in 433 AH.

He was bold, decisive, and shrewd. He slaughtered a number of his father’s aides, confiscated their wealth, his prestige soared, and nations acknowledged his authority.

He planted wooden stakes in his palace and capped them with the severed heads of grandees and kings, and people used to liken him
