Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Tarsūsī (ḥ).

Ibn Abī al-Khayr informed us, on the authority of al-Tarsūsī. Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb, the ḥāfiẓ, related it to us in the year 505 AH, dictating. ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Shaghaba al-Baṣrī transmitted it to us; Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Abī Muslim, dictating; Abū Bakr al-Shāfiʿī; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal; Zuhayr ibn Abī Zuhayr; Khalaf ibn al-Walīd; Abū Jaʿfar al-Rāzī, from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿUmar, from Ṣāliḥ ibn Kaysān, from ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit, who said:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach us these words when Ramadan arrived, saying: ‘O Allah, keep me safe for Ramadan, keep Ramadan safe for me, and receive it from me with acceptance.’ (1)”

It is singular (gharīb). Abū Zurʿah al-Rāzī also narrated it from Khalaf ibn al-Walīd, and Khalaf is its sole transmitter.

(1) The isnad is weak because of Abu Jafar al-Razi (his name was Isa b. Mahan). Ibn al-Madini said: “He used to confuse narrations.” Yahya said: “He was prone to mistakes.” Ahmad judged: “He is not strong in hadith.” Abu Zur‘a added: “He erred frequently,” while Ibn Hibban wrote: “He reports aberrant traditions from well-known transmitters.” He is also the narrator of the report from Anas: “The Messenger of Allah continued to recite the qunut in the dawn prayer until he left this world.” Ahmad (3/162), al-Darqutni (2/39), al-Tahawi (p. 143) and al-Bayhaqi (2/201) all transmit this report through the same Abu Jafar, from al-Rabi‘ b. Anas, from Anas b. Malik. The sound version related by Anas, found in the Sahih collections and elsewhere, states that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, recited the qunut in the dawn prayer for one month only and then discontinued it. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar remarks in al-Diraya, p. 117: the various reports show that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, performed the qunut only during times of public calamity (nawazil). This appears explicitly in the narrations of Ibn Hibban and Ibn Khuzayma, from Abu Hurayra: “The Messenger of Allah did not recite the qunut in the dawn prayer unless he was imploring for—or against—a people.” Ibn Khuzayma (no. 620) records the same wording from Anas, and both chains are authentic.
