31 – Ibn Shaghaba, Abū al-Qāsim ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿAlī ibn Khalaf
The Imām, hadith scholar, learned authority, reliable exemplar, devoted worshipper, and Shaykh of Basra: Abū al-Qāsim ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿAlī ibn Khalaf ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Naḍr ibn Shaghaba al-Anṣārī, al-Baṣrī. His grandfather is a unique narrator whose material is sought together with that of Shuʿba (1).
He transmitted from al-Qāḍī Abū ʿUmar al-Hāshimī, al-Ḥasan ibn Bashshār al-Sābūrī, Yūsuf ibn Ghassān, and others.
Among those who transmitted from him are Abū ʿAlī ibn Sukkara, Abū Naṣr al-Ghāzī, Abū Naṣr ibn Mākūlā, Jābir ibn Muḥammad, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad al-Samarqandī, Abū Ghālib al-Māwardī, and many more.
Al-Samʿānī said: “A shaykh, ḥāfiẓ, precise, trustworthy, and prolific; Ibn Mākūlā attended his dictation sessions.”
Ibn Sukkara said: “I found him after he had renounced everything and devoted himself to worship. I met him supplicating and weeping after the dawn prayer, so I read some hadith to him. He was granted martyrdom at the end of his life. He owned a portion of Sunan Abū Dāwūd related through Abū ʿUmar al-Hāshimī.”
I say: He was killed in 484 AH, when he was in his nineties, and none of his elevated isnāds has reached me.
