He was the last person to relate the Jāmiʿ of al-Tirmidhī with an elevated chain from ʿAbd al-Jabbār al-Jarrāḥī ⦗1⦘.

He also studied under Masʿūd ibn Muḥammad al-Baghawī and ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad al-Istirābādī ⦗2⦘.

Those who narrated from him include: his son ʿUthmān; Abū al-Fatḥ Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Shīrāzī; Aḥmad ibn Yāsir, the Qurʾān reciter; Abū al-Fatḥ Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAlī; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ḥamduwiyy ⦗3⦘; and many others.

(*) Al-Ansab, vol. 2, pp. 256–257; al-Ibar, vol. 3, p. 322; Uyun al-Tawarikh, vol. 13, p. 51. (1) His biography appeared earlier in volume 17, entry 154. (2) Al-Samani, in Al-Ansab 1/214, vocalises the place-name as Istrabad (kasra on the hamza and taʾ, with the sin quiescent); Ibn al-Athir in Al-Lubab adopts the same reading. Yaqut alone, in his Muʿjam 1/174, reads Astarabad (fatha on the hamza and taʾ) and remarks: “Astarabad is a large, famous town that has produced a multitude of scholars in every discipline; it belongs to the province of Tabaristan.” (3) Pronounced with a fatha on the ha, a quiescent mim, and a damma on the dal: it derives from Hamdawiyah, the name of an ancestor of the person bearing the nisbah.
