Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

of Yūsuf ibn Tashfīn captured him and put him to death in cold blood, killing with him his two sons, al-Faḍl and ʿAbbās, in 485 AH (1), when they seized command of al-Andalus.

ʿAbd al-Majīd ibn ʿIydhūn (2) composed on that event a ringing poem, unrivalled in its kind, from which are these lines:

O sons of al-Muẓaffar—may the days never
set down their stages(3) while mankind is still on its journey!
Who now will mount the couches, who will grasp the reins,
who will guide the spear-points toward the frontier?
Who now will stand for excellence, who for the reed-pen,
who for courage(4)—for the bringing of benefit and the repelling of harm(5)?

The poem is lengthy, and Ibn ʿIydhūn served as vizier to al-Mutawakkil.

(1) See al-Kamil 10/193; al-Maghrib fi huli al-Maghrib 1/364; al-Mukhtasar 2/200. (2) In the base manuscript the name is written with a subscript ya and a dotted dhal, whereas the biographical sources give it as ‘Abdun’ with a single-dotted ba and an undotted dal (Fawat al-Wafayat 2/388; al-Dhakhira 2/2/668; al-Maghrib 1/374). ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Muʿallimi, in his notes on al-Ikmal 6/86, vocalises it as ‘Iydun’ (ya + undotted dal) and remarks that the printed references use the ba and undotted dal form. A full biography will appear in vol. 19, no. 348; consult it there. (3) Al-Dhakhira, al-Maghrib, and Fawat al-Wafayat read: marahala. (4) Those same sources read: li-s-samaha. (5) The present verses and the remainder of this fine ode are found in al-Dhakhira 2/2/721-724; Fawat al-Wafayat 2/389-391; parts of the poem also appear in al-Maghrib 1/376. Al-Rawd gives the form al-Nasir b. ʿAlnas; the editor notes that the name is also written ʿAlnas, Aʿlan-nas, or Aʿla-l-nas. The margin of al-Kamil, Yaqut’s Muʿjam, and al-Zuhrkali’s Aʿlam likewise read ʿAlnas.
