al-Aṣbahānī; ʿAbd Allah ibn Abī al-Tāʾib informed us; Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr informed us; al-Silafī informed us and said:
Abū al-Ghanāʾim al-Narsī informed us; Abū Naṣr ʿAlī ibn Hibat Allah al-ʿIjlī, the ḥāfiẓ, informed us; Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn Mahdī narrated to me; Abū Ḥāzim al-ʿAbdawī narrated to us; Abū ʿAmr ibn Maṭar narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn Yūsuf al-Hisinjānī narrated to us; Abū al-Faḍl, a close companion of Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal narrated to us; Zuhayr ibn Ḥarb narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī narrated to us; ʿUbayd Allah ibn Muʿādh narrated to us; my father narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Abū Bakr ibn Ḥafṣ, from Abū Salamah, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
“The wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to trim their hair until it was like a wafrah (1).”
This Aḥmad ibn Mahdī is al-Khaṭīb. ʿAbd al-Wāsiʿ al-Abharī conveyed it to us by authorisation; Ibrāhīm ibn Barakāt conveyed it to us; Abū al-Qāsim Ibn ʿAsākir conveyed it to us; Abū al-Qāsim al-Nasīb conveyed it to us; al-Khaṭīb … mentioned the report and then added at the end:
al-Hisinjānī said: “ʿUbayd Allah ibn Muʿādh narrated it to us …,” and he cited it. Then al-Khaṭīb said:
“It was also transmitted by Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Ṣāliḥ ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, from Ibrāhīm al-Hisinjānī: al-Faḍl ibn Ziyād narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal narrated to us; Zuhayr narrated the same.”
I say: In Ibn Mākūlā’s version a fault appears—his wording is “Abū al-Faḍl,” whereas it should simply be “al-Faḍl.” In the copy held by Yūsuf the ḥāfiẓ the phrase “Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal narrated to us” is missing.
al-Muʾammal ibn Muḥammad and Abū al-Ghanāʾim al-Qaysī informed us, saying: Zayd ibn…
(1) wafrah: hair that reaches roughly to the earlobes.
