Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

and he went to extremes, accusing them of anthropomorphism. Turmoil then erupted, the cauldrons of strife boiled over, and each faction pronounced the other to be unbelievers. When he planned to preach in the al-Manṣūr congregational mosque, the naqīb al-nuqabāʾ declared, “Wait until I remove my family, for bloodshed and looting are inevitable.”

The doors of the mosque were shut. Al-Bakrī ascended the pulpit surrounded by Turks armed with bows, and he was styled “the Standard-Bearer of the Sunnah.” A band of Ḥanbalīs then set upon his companions, whereupon the authorities (1) intervened forcefully. The houses of the sons of the judge Ibn al-Farrāʾ were raided and their books confiscated, among them a treatise on the divine attributes. The work was read aloud in al-Bakrī’s presence while he railed against it and stirred the crowd. He then went out to the army camp, lodging a complaint against the ʿAmīd of Baghdad, Abū l-Fatḥ ibn Abī l-Layth.

It was also said that during one sermon he praised Imām Aḥmad, after which he recited, “Yet Solomon did not disbelieve; it was the devils who disbelieved” (Q 2:102). A pebble struck him—then another. The naqīb investigated and discovered that a group of Hāshimite Ḥanbalīs had hidden in the roof’s lining; he punished them, and al-Bakrī returned ill.

He died in Jumādā II, 476 AH (2).
