He was born in the year 410 AH and lived for a little over sixty years.
Abū al-Ḥasan Shurayḥ ibn Muḥammad (1) said: “My father died in Shawwāl of the year 476 AH. I informed Abū al-Ḥajjāj al-Aʿlam—those two were like brothers—and he broke down in tears, saying, ‘I shall not live more than a month after him.’ And so it was.” (2)
286 – Dubays ibn ʿAlī ibn Mazīd al-Asadī *

He was a courageous horseman, open-handed, widely praised, and held in great esteem.
He lived for eighty years.
Poets composed numerous elegies for him. He was the ruler of the city of al-Ḥillah (3) and was known for his inclination toward Shi‘ism.
He died in Shawwāl of the year 474 AH.
(1) The manuscript reads “Muhammad b. Shurayh,” which is incorrect. The proper form, as shown in his biography in al-Sila 1/234-235, appears immediately after his father’s entry.
(2) The report is found in Wafayat al-Ayan 7/82. Ibn al-Imad erred in placing his death in 495 AH.

(3) Such is the author’s statement. Ibn Khallikan, however, records in the biography of Sayf al-Dawla Sadaqa b. Mansur b. Dubays—the subject’s grandson—that Hilla was first laid out by that Sadaqa in 495/1101, and thus bears his name. Ibn al-Athir likewise observes in al-Kamil 10/440 that Sayf al-Dawla built the Hilla al-Sayfiyya in Iraq, and Yaqut, under Hillat Bani Mazyad, notes that the first to build and settle it was Sayf al-Dawla Sadaqa b. Mansur b. Dubays. Their forefathers had previously dwelt in the district of al-Nayl (Mujam al-Buldan 2/294). Hence Ibn Khallikan, Ibn al-Athir and Yaqut all concur that Hilla was founded by Sadaqa, the grandson of the present figure. His biography will appear in volume 19, no. 165, where al-Dhahabi calls him “lord of Hilla.”
