Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

, al-Shantamarī (1), the Andalusian, the grammarian—nicknamed al-Aʿlam—he was distinguished by a cleft lip (2). He trained under Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad al-Iflilī and the man of letters Muslim ibn Aḥmad. He excelled in philology, grammar, and poetry; students gathered around him in large numbers, and he produced numerous scholarly works (3). Among those who received knowledge from him were the ḥadith master Abū ʿAlī al-Jayyānī and others. In his later years he lost his sight, and he was counted among the most gifted and outstanding minds of his time.

(1) Al-Silah, 2/681, records his name as Yusuf ibn ‘Isa ibn Sulayman, whereas al-Mukhtasar, 2/204, gives it as Abu al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf ibn Sulayman. The nisbah al-Shantamari refers to Shantamariyya, a town in the west of al-Andalus; Ibn Khallikan vocalises it shan-ta-ma-riyyah (with initial sh pronounced, n quiescent, open ta, open mim, kasrah on the ra’, followed by a doubled ya’ and a final silent ha’). (2) The expression means that the cleft is in the upper lip; if it is in the lower lip, the term used is aflah. (3) For his writings see Mu‘jam al-Udaba’, 20/61, and Wafayat al-A‘yan, 7/81–82. Among what has been printed is his Sharh Abyat Sibawayh, published in the margins of Kitab Sibawayh; and his Sharh Diwan al-Shu‘ara’ al-Sittah al-Jahiliyyin, a commentary on the poetry of the six pre-Islamic poets Imru’ al-Qays, al-Nabighah al-Dhubyani, ‘Alqamah al-Fahl, Zuhayr, Tarafah and ‘Antarah. In the introduction he states that he relied on the most accurate recension, that of al-Asma‘i, because scholars concurred in preferring it, and he then added reliably transmitted, carefully selected odes from other sources. The orientalist Ahlwardt edited and published the work in 1869 after collating, revising and reordering it, appending a list of all poems attributed to each poet. Mustafa al-Saqqa re-issued the collection in 1930 under the title Mukhtar al-Shi‘r al-Jahili, and Muhammad ‘Abd al-Mun‘im Khafajah did likewise in 1954. Subsequently each diwan was printed separately: Sharh Diwan Zuhayr, ed. Dr Fakhreddin Qabawa (1970); Sharh Diwan ‘Alqamah, several editions, the last prepared by Lutfi al-Saqqal and Duriyyah al-Khatib (Aleppo 1969); Sharh Diwan Tarafah, same editors, Arab Academy, Damascus; Sharh Diwan ‘Antarah, ed. Muhammad Sa‘id al-Mulawi, Islamic Press, Damascus; and Sharh Diwan al-Nabighah, ed. Muhammad Abi al-Fadl Ibrahim.
