He passed away in Ṣafar 470 AH.
Ibn al-Najjār said, “He had withdrawn to constant worship, lived austerely, and was uncompromising in his school of law. That severity impelled the common folk to harm others, kindle strife, shed blood, and revile the scholars, so he was imprisoned.”
I say: The day of his death was a day of great public attendance (1).
277 – al-Dabbās, Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn Hibat Allāh ibn Muḥammad *
The venerable, long-lived shaykh, Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn Hibat Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf ibn Ṣadaqah al-Raḥabī, known as al-Dabbās.
He stated on more than one occasion, “I was born in 370 AH.”
He heard ḥadith from Abū al-Ḥusayn ibn Bishrān and others.
Ibn al-Najjār said, “He also claimed to have heard from Abū al-Ḥusayn ibn Samʿūn and Abū Ṭāhir al-Mukhalliṣ, and that his original notebooks were lost in a raid. He lived in al-Naṣriyyah.”
I say: Among those who transmitted from him were Abū Bakr al-Anṣārī and Ismāʿīl al-Samarqandī.
Ibn Nāṣir said, “Abū Bakr al-Raḥabī died in Rajab 474 AH, having reached one hundred and four years of age.”
