—bringing his corpus to more than thirty volumes, together with other pieces (1).
He passed away in Rabīʿ al-Awwal, 479 AH.
269 – al-Sarrāj, Abū Nasr Muḥammad b. Sahl b. Muḥammad *
The long-lived shaykh and chief hadith authority (musnid) of Nishapur, Abū Nasr Muḥammad b. Sahl b. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad al-Shādhyākhi (2), known as al-Sarrāj.
He heard hadith from Abū Nuʿaym ʿAbd al-Malik b. Muḥammad al-Isfarāyinī, Abū al-Ṭayyib al-Ṣuʿlūkī, Abū Ṭāhir b. Maḥmish, ʿAbd Allāh b. Yūsuf al-Aṣbahānī, and many others.
Among those who narrated from him were Ibn Ṭāhir al-Maqdisī, Ismāʿīl b. Muḥammad al-Taymī, ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad al-Furāwī, and ʿAbd al-Ghāfir b. Ismāʿīl, who said: “He was a tidy, amiable shaykh, regularly present at the Ṣāʿidiyya gathering for conviviality and service. He heard a vast amount and lived ninety years.”
He died in Ṣafar, 483 AH.
I say: He was the last person to transmit from Abū Nuʿaym al-Mihrajānī; today his narrations are found with a high chain in the book al-Targhīb wa-l-Tarhīb by al-Taymī.
