By this same chain going back to al-Murtadā: Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Ṭalḥah al-Baṣrī informed us; Ṣāliḥ b. Aḥmad al-Hamadhānī, the ḥāfiẓ, narrated to us; Ibrāhīm b. ʿAmrūs narrated to us; Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Jurjānī narrated to us; al-Firyābī narrated to us; Sufyān al-Thawrī narrated to us, from Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, from Ibn Abī Najīḥ, from Mujāhid regarding the verse: “Why do the rabbis and the scholars not forbid them…?” (Al-Māʾidah 5:63). He said, “The rabbānīyūn are the learned jurists; they rank above the aḥbār.” (1)

Jumayʿ narrated to us, from Simāk, from Muḥammad b. al-Munkadir, who said: Ibn ʿAbbās, tracing it back to the Prophet, said:
“Indeed, those who stand nearest in rank to prophethood are the people of jihad and the people of knowledge. The people of knowledge declared what the prophets brought, while the people of jihad fought for what the prophets brought.” (2)
