Now, these are the two reports in which Abū Ismāʿīl omitted one transmitter apiece. In the first case, the narrator who is missing above Ibn Bashshār is Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī; in the second, the person dropped is Abū al-Walīd al-Ṭayālisī, who reports from Yazīd.
Abū Dāwūd also produced the ḥadīth with a higher chain: from al-Qaʿnabī, from Yazīd, with the same contents.
Al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī informed us; Ibn al-Lattī told us; Abū al-Waqt told us; ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad told us; ʿUmar b. Ibrāhīm dictated to us; ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad al-Ḥayyānī narrated to us; I heard ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Ḥātim say, “I heard al-Rabīʿ b. Sulaymān say, ‘I heard al-Shāfiʿī say:
“Reading ḥadīth is better than performing supererogatory prayer.”’
Its chain back to al-Shāfiʿī is sound, yet the wording is unusual; what is reliably transmitted is: “Seeking knowledge.” (1)
