Salamah was poor in retention. Among those who nevertheless narrated from him were Ibn al-Mubarak and al-Qaʿnabi. He died in 156 AH. One of his objectionable reports is what Suraij b. Yunus transmitted: “Ibn Abi Fudayk told us, from Salamah, from Anas:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to a man, ‘Have you married?’
He replied, ‘I possess nothing with which to marry.’
He said, ‘Are you not familiar with “Say: He is Allah, One”?’
He said, ‘Indeed.’
He said, ‘That is a quarter of the Quran. Are you not familiar with “Say: O you who disbelieve”?’
He said, ‘Indeed.’
He said, ‘That is a quarter of the Quran. Are you not familiar with “When the earth is shaken”?’
He said, ‘Indeed.’
He said, ‘That is a quarter of the Quran—so marry, marry!’⦗2⦘
