and was then dismissed after a few months in favour of al-Mutawallī. After al-Mutawallī’s death the chair passed to the noble Sharīf Abū al-Qāsim ad-Dabbūsī, who remained until he died; he was followed by al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad aṭ-Ṭabarī. Shaykh ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn Muḥammad al-Fāmī then arrived, and the two men alternated in teaching until they were both removed in 484 AH and replaced by al-Ghazālī. Al-Ghazālī taught for four years, performed the ḥajj, settled in Syria, and left his brother Aḥmad to deputise for him.
In 489 AH aṭ-Ṭabarī was reinstated and lectured for three years. He was succeeded by al-Kiyā Abū al-Ḥasan al-Harrāsī, who stayed until his death in (504). The post then went to Abū Bakr ash-Shāshī, who served until he died, whereupon Asʿad al-Mīhanī succeeded him. Al-Mīhanī was dismissed in Shawwāl (513) and al-Agharr ʿAbd al-Raḥmān aṭ-Ṭabarī was appointed, only to be deposed in (517) in favour of Abū al-Fatḥ ibn Barhān. Four months later Ibn Barhān was removed and replaced by Abū al-Fatḥ ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad al-Bāqarḥī. Two months afterwards al-Mīhanī was restored; two months later Ibn Barhān returned, but after delivering a single lesson he was dismissed and Abū Manṣūr ibn al-Razzāz was appointed. Within a few months he too was removed in favour of Abū Saʿīd Yaḥyā ibn ʿAlī al-Ḥulwānī. He was followed by Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥasan ibn al-Fatā, who taught until his death in 521 AH.
Ibn al-Razzāz was then recalled and held the post for ten years, after which he was dismissed in favour of Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Laṭīf al-Khujandī. Al-Khujandī taught for a few months, then left for Isfahān, and Ibn al-Razzāz was reinstated. He was deposed again in 537 AH, and the waqf-founder’s grandson, Abū Naṣr Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad ibn Niẓām al-Mulk, was appointed. He was dismissed at the beginning of 545 AH, after which Yūsuf ad-Dimashqī took over; he was confined to his home two weeks later, and Abū al-Najīb as-Suhrawardī replaced him. In 547 AH as-Suhrawardī was dismissed and the waqf-founder’s grandson was reinstated. Ten years later he too was removed and Yūsuf ad-Dimashqī returned to the chair.
In (563) Abū Jaʿfar ibn al-Ṣabbāgh served as acting professor but was relieved three years later; the position then went to Abū Naṣr Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ash-Shāshī, who was dismissed in 569 AH. Abū al-Khayr aṭ-Ṭālqānī succeeded him, teaching for eleven years before returning to his homeland. The post then passed to Abū Ṭālib ibn al-Khall; afterwards ʿAlī ibn ʿAlī al-Fāriqī deputised.
