Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

al-Khaṭīb (1) said: “We recorded ḥadith from him, and he was trustworthy.”

He studied jurisprudence under Abū Ḥāmid al-Isfarāyinī and conducted his own circle for issuing legal verdicts.

He died in Dhū al-Qaʿda, 448 AH, at nearly eighty years of age.

His Son

239 – Ibn al-Ṣabbāgh, Abū al-Qāsim ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-Sayyid ibn Abī Ṭāhir

The scholar, ḥadith authority, and upright witness Abū al-Qāsim ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-Sayyid, son of Shaykh Abū Ṭāhir ibn al-Ṣabbāgh.

He heard a reading of Ibn Mujāhid’s Kitāb al-Sabʿah from Abū Muḥammad ibn Hazārmard al-Ṣarīfīnī, along with other material, and he also studied under his father and a number of additional scholars.

Those who transmitted from him include Ibn ʿAsākir, al-Samʿānī, al-Muʾayyad ibn al-Ikhwah, and ʿUmar ibn Ṭabrazad. He likewise granted a written licence to Abū al-Qāsim ibn Ṣaṣrā.

Al-Samʿānī remarked: “A reliable shaykh, devout and of commendable conduct. He died in Jumādā al-Ūlā, 542 AH, at the age of eighty-one—may Allah have mercy on him.”

Thus Abū Naṣr ibn al-Ṣabbāgh was the first to lecture at the Niẓāmiyya when it opened in 459 AH. After twenty days he was removed and Shaykh Abū Isḥāq took over. Following Abū Isḥāq, Abū Saʿd al-Mutawallī taught there for a short period, after which Ibn al-Ṣabbāgh assumed the post—and was then dismissed.
