of them’ (33:51). He added: “There were women who offered themselves to the Prophet ﷺ. He consummated marriage with some of them and deferred others, and after his death they never married. Among them was Umm Sharik, the woman from the Daws tribe.”
Hishām ibn ʿUrwah narrated from his father: “We used to say that the case of Umm Sharik was that she had offered herself to the Prophet ﷺ, and she was a pious woman.”
Hishām ibn al-Kalbī reported from his father, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Ibn ʿAbbās: “Laylā bint al-Khaṭīm came to the Prophet ﷺ and offered herself to him. He said, ‘I accept.’ She went back to her people and announced, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has married me.’ They said, ‘You are a jealous woman; you will envy his wives and he will supplicate against you.’ So she returned and said, ‘Release me.’ He replied, ‘I have released you.’ ”
The Prophet ﷺ also proposed to Umm Hānīʾ bint Abī Ṭālib, Ḍubāʿah bint ʿĀmir, and Ṣafiyyah bint Bishāmah, but it was not decreed for him to marry any of them.
