Qatadah related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married Asmāʾ bint al-Nuʿmān al-Juniyyah, a woman from Yemen. When he entered upon her he summoned her to come to him, but she replied, “You come to me,” so he divorced her.
Al-Wāqidī said: ʿAbd-Allāh ibn Jaʿfar told me, on the authority of ʿAmr ibn Ṣāliḥ, from Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abzā, that the Juniyyah sought refuge from him. She was advised, “That will make you dearer to him,” yet she had been misled by what had been reported of his admiration for her beauty and figure. When the Prophet was informed of the person who had prompted her to say that, he remarked, “They are like the women who cut their hands in Joseph’s story.” This occurred in the year 9 AH.
Hishām ibn al-Kalbī transmitted—through his father, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Ibn ʿAbbās—that when Asmāʾ bint al-Nuʿmān sought refuge from the Prophet ﷺ, he left her angrily. Al-Ashʿath ibn Qays said to him, “May Allah never cause you grief, O Messenger of Allah. Shall I not marry you to a woman who is her equal in beauty and lineage?” The Prophet asked, “Who is she?” He answered, “My sister Qutaylah.” The Prophet responded, “I have already married her.” Al-Ashʿath then returned to Ḥaḍramawt and later brought her with him, but on the journey he learned of the Prophet’s death, so he sent her back and she apostatized along with him.
Another report from Qatadah and others states that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married Sanāʾ bint al-Ṣalt al-Sulamiyyah, but she died before he consummated the marriage.
Ibn ʿUmar—through a chain that is not sound—reported that among the Prophet’s wives was Sanāʾ bint Sufyān al-Kilābiyyah. He also dispatched Abū Usayd al-Sāʿidī to propose on his behalf to a woman of Banū ʿĀmir named ʿAmrah bint Yazīd. The Prophet married her, but when he was later informed that she had a white skin-blemish he divorced her.
Al-Wāqidī further said: Abū Maʿshar narrated to me that the Prophet ﷺ married Malikah bint
