Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind transmitted—through ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās—that the Prophet ﷺ married Qutaylah, the sister of al-Ashʿath ibn Qays, but he passed away before informing her, so Allah released her from any marital bond with him.
Ibrāhīm ibn al-Faḍl said: Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us from Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind, from al-Shaʿbī, that ʿIkrimah ibn Abī Jahl married Qutaylah bint Qays. Abū Bakr intended to have him executed, but ʿUmar said to him, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never approached her nor consummated the marriage. She apostatized along with her brother, and thus became disassociated from Allah and His Messenger.” ʿUmar kept pressing him until he desisted.
Al-Wāqidī, however, related—from Ibn Abī l-Zinād, from Hishām, from his father—that al-Walīd ibn ʿAbd al-Malik wrote to ask: “Did the Prophet marry Qutaylah, the sister of al-Ashʿath?” He replied, “He never married her at all, nor did he marry any woman from Kindah except the sister of the Banū al-Jawn. When she was brought to him and arrived in Madinah, he looked at her and divorced her before consummation.”
Others say she was Fāṭimah bint al-Ḍaḥḥāk. Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to me from al-Zuhrī, who said: “She is Fāṭimah bint al-Ḍaḥḥāk. She sought refuge from him, so he divorced her. Thereafter she would gather dung, saying, ‘I am the wretched one.’ He married her in 8 AH and she died in 60 AH.”
Ibn Isḥāq stated: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ married Asmāʾ bint Kaʿb al-Jūniyyah, but he divorced her before entering upon her.”
He also said that the Prophet married ʿAmrah bint Yazīd, who had previously been the wife of al-Faḍl ibn al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib. This, however, is a rejected report, for al-Faḍl was too young for such a marriage.
