she swore by Allah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away in these two garments. This report is agreed upon.
Al-Zuhrī related: ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn told me that when they entered Madinah after the slaying of al-Ḥusayn, al-Miswar ibn Makhramah met him and said, “Is there any need you would like me to take care of for you?” I replied, “No.” He continued, “Will you not give me the sword of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? I fear the people may overpower you and seize it. By Allah, if you entrust it to me no one will lay a hand on it until my soul leaves my body.” This narration is recorded by both Imams.
ʿĪsā ibn Ṭuhmān said: “Anas brought out for us two rough sandals, each with two straps.” Thābit later informed me, on Anas’s authority, that they were the sandals of the Prophet ﷺ. Al-Bukhārī recorded it.
Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah reported from Qatādah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married fifteen women, consummated marriage with thirteen, had eleven with him at one time, and died while nine remained under his care.
As for the two with whom he did not consummate the marriage, other women spoiled matters for them, so he divorced them. They had said to one of them, “When he approaches you, hold back,” so she did and he divorced her. Regarding the other, when his son Ibrāhīm died she remarked, “If he were truly a prophet, his son would not have died,” so he divorced her as well.
Five of his wives were from Quraysh: ʿĀʾishah, Ḥafṣah, Umm Ḥabībah, Umm Salamah, and Sawdah bint Zamʿah.
The others were Maymūnah bint al-Ḥārith of the Hilāl tribe, Juwayriyyah bint al-Ḥārith of Khuzaʿah, Zaynab bint Jaḥsh of the Asad tribe, and Ṣafiyyah bint Ḥuyayy ibn Akhṭab from Khaybar.
The Prophet ﷺ departed this life while still married to these nine—may Allah be pleased with them all.
