Ibn Isḥāq relates, in his account of the Tabūk expedition, that the Prophet ﷺ presented the people of Ayla with his mantle together with the letter of security he had written for them; later Abū al-ʿAbbās ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad—meaning the caliph al-Saffāḥ—purchased it for three hundred dinars.
Ibn ʿUyaynah narrated, through al-Walīd ibn Kathīr, from Ḥasan ibn Ḥusayn, from Fāṭimah daughter of al-Ḥusayn, that the Prophet ﷺ passed away while two mantles were on the haft, still being woven for him. This report is mursal; the haft is the wooden beam around which the weaver winds the cloth, also called the maṭwāh.
Zamʿah ibn Ṣāliḥ transmitted, from Abū Ḥāzim, from Sahl ibn Saʿd: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ died while a woollen cloak of his was still on the loom.” Its chain of transmission is sound.
Al-Zuhrī said: ʿUrwah related to me that ʿĀʾishah informed him that Fāṭimah, daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, sent word to Abū Bakr asking him for her inheritance from the property Allah had bestowed upon His Messenger. At that time Fāṭimah was requesting the Prophet’s charitable estate in Madinah, Fadak, and what remained of the one-fifth share of Khaybar. Abū Bakr replied, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘We, the prophets, are not inherited from; whatever we leave is charity. The family of Muḥammad may eat from this wealth—meaning, the wealth of Allah—but they have no right to take more than what suffices for food.’ By Allah, I will not alter the Prophet’s charitable endowments from the state they were in during his lifetime; rather, I shall administer them exactly as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did.” Accordingly, Abū Bakr refused to hand anything over to Fāṭimah, and she was displeased with him because of that. The remainder of the report is mentioned elsewhere. Al-Bukhārī recorded it.
Abū Burdah said: “I visited ʿĀʾishah, and she brought out for us a thick lower garment made in Yemen and a cloak of the type you call mulabbadah (felted). She swore by Allah that…"
