The shaykh, scholar, and reliable transmitter: Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥasan al-Makkī, a Shāfiʿī known as al-Ḥannāṭ (the grain merchant). He was the last person to relate from Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Firās al-ʿAbqasī, ʿUbayd Allah ibn Aḥmad al-Saqaṭī, and others.
Those who narrated from him include Abū al-Muẓaffar Manṣūr al-Samʿānī, Muḥammad ibn Ṭāhir al-Maqdisī, ʿAbd al-Munʿim ibn Abī al-Qāsim al-Qushayrī, Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-ʿAbbāsī al-Makkī, a number of visitors from the Maghrib, and others, the last of them to die being al-ʿAbbāsī.
Abū Saʿd al-Samʿānī declared him trustworthy in his book al-Ansāb (1).
Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Qāshānī relates: “I was reading hadith to Hibat Allah ibn ʿAbd al-Wārith, the ḥāfiẓ, when he said, ‘I recited before Abū ʿAlī al-Shāfiʿī:
“Oh, would that I might spend a night … in Fakh…” (2)
I pronounced it with the letter jīm, but he corrected me: ‘…in Fakh,’ with a khāʾ. He then took me outside Mecca, led me to a spot, and said, ‘My son, this is Fakh.’”
Al-Samʿānī adds: Ismāʿīl ibn Muḥammad, the ḥāfiẓ, narrated from Abū ʿAlī
