177 – Ibn al-Khallāl, ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad al-Baghdādī*
The shaykh, the upright, the trustworthy—Abū al-Qāsim ʿAbd Allah, son of the ḥāfiẓ Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Baghdādī, known as al-Khallāl (1).
He was born in 385 AH.
His father took him early to gatherings and had him hear ḥadith from Abū Ḥafṣ al-Kattānī (2), Abū Ṭāhir al-Mukhaḍḍiṣ, ʿUbayd Allah ibn Aḥmad al-Ṣaydalanī, and others.
Al-Khaṭīb (3) said: “I wrote down ḥadith from him, and he was truthful.”
Abū Saʿd al-Samʿānī said: “He was righteous and trustworthy, with sound auditions. His father started him young and arranged his hearings, and he lived so long that many reports were transmitted from him. Ismāʿīl ibn … narrated to us from him—”
…so they repeated the call, and they repeated it a third time. He said, “You are like the women who were with Yusuf. Instruct Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.” Abu Bakr went out to lead, but the Prophet ﷺ felt some relief, so he came out supported by two men—I can almost see his feet dragging from pain. Abu Bakr wanted to step back, yet the Prophet ﷺ signalled to him: “Remain where you are,” and he was brought forward until he sat beside him.
Al-Aʿmash was asked: “Was the Prophet ﷺ praying, Abu Bakr following his prayer, and the people following Abu Bakr?” He nodded: “Yes.”
Al-Bukhari recorded it (no. 664, Book of Adhan, ‘The limit at which a sick person may still attend the congregation’) through the chain of ʿUmar b. Ḥafṣ b. Ghayath; he also narrated it through other isnads from Al-Aʿmash (nos. 712–713). Muslim (418/95–96) and al-Nasaʾi 2/99 relate it as well. Through a separate chain from ʿAʾisha, it is reported by Malik 1/170–171; al-Bukhari (198, 664, 665, 679, 683, 687, 716, 2588, 3099, 3384, 4442–4445, 5714, 7303); Muslim (418/90–94); al-Tirmidhi (3663); and al-Nasaʾi 2/101–102.
