The ruler of Yemen. His father was counted among the judges of Yemen, and he himself was King Abū’l-Ḥasan ʿAlī, son of the judge Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī (2).

The Bāṭinite missionary ʿĀmir al-Zawākhī (3) attached himself to him and kept at him until, while still a youth, he assented to his call. ʿĀmir detected promise in him; it is said that he had discovered his description in the “Book of Images,” showed it to him, stirred his desire, and confided certain matters to him. Not long afterward ʿĀmir died, bequeathing his books to ʿAlī,

Ibn Khallikan notes: The nisba al-Sulayhi is pronounced with a damma on the sad, a fatha on the lam, a quiescent ya and then a ha. I do not know to what it originally refers; it most probably goes back to a man, for the personal name Sulayh is attested and the family was named after him. See further al-Ansab 8/87. (2) Wafayat al-Ayan, al-Bidaya, al-Muntazam, al-Kamil and al-Nujum al-Zahira all give his kunya as Abu Kamil. (3) Yaqut says: al-Zawakhi – scanned like al-Qawafi and now obsolete – is a village in the district of Mikhlaf Haraz, later part of the province of al-Najm in northern Yemen; from it came Amir b. Abd Allah al-Zawakhi, the Sulayhi propagandist. Ibn Khaldun’s Tarikh records the form al-Zawayi, derived from Zawaya, a village near Harran. In al-Hammadi’s Kashf Asrar al-Batiniyya the name appears as Sulayman b. Abd Allah al-Zawahi.
