Among those who narrated from him were Zāhir ibn Ṭāhir, his brother Wajīh, ʿAbd al-Ghāfir ibn Ismāʿīl, Ismāʿīl ibn Aḥmad the mu’adhdhin, Muḥammad ibn al-Faḍl al-Farāwī, and others. He was from Jūr, a district of Nīshāpūr. He passed away in Jumāda al-Ākhira of the year 469 AH (1) at a very advanced age.
172 – Lord of Aleppo, ʿIzz al-Dawla Maḥmūd ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Kilābī *
King ʿIzz al-Dawla, Maḥmūd (2) son of King Ṣāliḥ ibn Mirdās al-Kilābī, took over Aleppo from his uncle ʿAṭiyya and ruled it for ten years. He was brave, awe-inspiring, and generous, skillfully balancing his allegiances with both the Egyptian and the Baghdadi courts (3). Ibn Ḥayyūs (4) composed panegyrics in his praise.
He died in 467 AH (5). His son, the emir Naṣr, succeeded him, and Naṣr’s mother—
(1) Al-Jawahir al-mudiyya, 2/634, gives the date as year sixty-seven (467 AH).
(*) Main sources: al-Muntazam, 8/300; al-Kamil, 10/105-106; al-Mukhtasar, 2/192-193; al-Ibr, 3/266; Duwal al-Islam, 2/3; Tatimmat al-Mukhtasar, 1/570-571; al-Bidaya wa-l-nihaya, 12/115; al-Nujum al-zahira, 5/100-101; Shadharat al-dhahab, 3/329.
(2) In al-Bidaya his name is mistakenly given as “Muhammad,” and the author here omits his father’s name; al-Ibr and al-Muntazam read: Mahmud b. Nasr b. Salih b. Mirdas.
(3) Al-Ibr adds: “because his house lay between the two sides.”
(4) The person meant is the emir-poet Abu l-Fityan Muhammad b. Sultan b. Muhammad b. Hayyus al-Ghanawi; his biography will appear under no. 209. In al-Mukhtasar his name is misread as “Jiyush.”
(5) Ibn al-Jawzi places his death in 468 AH, Ibn al-Athir in 469 AH, and the author of al-Mukhtasar follows them; yet he later found in Tarikh Halab by Kamal al-Din b. al-Adim that the correct year is 467 AH.
