—namely, that a qualifying phrase has been left implicit with respect to both the full bath and the ablution. What must be understood is: “it is prescribed,” or “it is Sunnah,” or “it is recommended”(1) or “it is obligatory.” And Allah knows best.
171 – al-Jūrī, Abū Manṣūr ʿUmar ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad *
A scholar, ḥadith master, instructor, and reliable authority: Abū Manṣūr ʿUmar ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Mūsā(2) al-Jūrī, a Ḥanafī, a Sufi, a devoted worshipper, and a disciple of Shaykh Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī.
He heard hadith from Abū al-Ḥusayn al-Khaffāf, Abū Nuʿaym ʿAbd al-Malik ibn al-Ḥasan, and Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn al-ʿAlawī.
He belonged to the inner circle of al-Sulamī’s companions and transcribed his works(3).
(1) This is also the opinion of Malik and al-Shafi‘i, may Allah have mercy on them. It is strengthened by what al-Khatib relates in the entry on Muhammad ibn Abd Allah al-Makhrami (Tarikh, 5/424) through the chain of Abd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal. He said: “My father told me that he had written down the hadith of Ubayd Allah, from Nafi‘, from Ibn Umar: ‘We used to wash the deceased; some of us would perform a full bath afterwards and some would not.’ I asked him whether the report was sound. He replied: ‘Over there sits a young man called Muhammad ibn Abd Allah who is narrating it from Abu Hisham al-Makhzumi, from Wahib; go and write it from him.’” Ibn Hajar declared the chain sound in Talkhis, 1/138. Al-Hakim (1/386) and al-Bayhaqi (3/398) likewise transmitted, with a fair chain according to Ibn Hajar, the Prophet’s saying reported by Ibn Abbas: “You are not obliged to bathe after washing your dead, for the dead among you are not impure; it is enough for you to wash your hands.” Al-Hakim judged it authentic, and al-Dhahabi agreed.

The nisba al-Jawri, with a hard j and ending in r, refers to “Jawr,” a name shared by two places: (i) a town in the province of Fars, famous for the damask rose (ward Jawri), and (ii) a quarter of Nishapur. The person under discussion is linked to the second, as stated by the author, al-Sam‘ani, Ibn al-Athir, Yaqut, and Ibn al-Qaysarani. Al-Jawahir al-Mudiyya mistakenly assigns him to the first locality.
(2) Al-Ansab al-Muttafiqa, p. 33, records his name as: Umar ibn Ahmad ibn Musa ibn Mansur al-Jawri.
