Description of the Prophet’s grave, peace and blessings be upon him:

ʿAmr ibn ʿUthmān ibn Hāniʾ reported from al-Qāsim: I said to ʿĀʾishah, “Lift the covering so that I may see the grave of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and the graves of his two Companions.” She uncovered three graves for me—neither raised above the ground nor sunken into it. They lay level with the earth, strewn with small reddish pebbles from the courtyard. Abū Dāwūd transmits the report in this form.

Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh, on the authority of Sufyān the date-seller, stated that he saw the Prophet’s grave shaped like a low rounded mound. Al-Bukhārī includes this report.

Al-Wāqidī said: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Muḥammad related to us, from Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad, from his father, who said: “The Prophet’s grave was made level with the ground.” This chain is weak.

ʿUrwah narrated from ʿĀʾishah that she said: I heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, during the illness from which he never recovered, say, “May Allah curse the Jews and the Christians; they turned the graves of their prophets into places of worship.”

She added, “Had it not been for that statement, his grave would have been left openly accessible, but he feared—or it was feared—that it might be turned into a mosque.” Al-Bukhārī records this report.
