His father recorded: “My son ʿAbd Allah was born on the night of Friday, after five days of Safar had passed, in the year eighty-four.
Ibn Hazarmard died on the third of Jumada al-Akhirah, in the year 469 AH.
Abu al-Hasan ibn al-Bukhari and others wrote to us, in the collection al-Jaʿdiyyāt, that ʿUmar ibn Muhammad told them, saying: ʿAbd al-Wahhab the ḥāfiẓ informed us; ʿAbd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Khatib informed us (1); Abu al-Qasim ibn Ḥabābah informed us; Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi narrated to us; ʿAli ibn al-Jaʿd narrated to me; Abu al-Ashhab informed me, from al-Hasan, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever claims, ‘I am in Paradise,’ will be in the Fire.”
This is a mursal, singular report (2).
Using the same chain: ʿAli narrated to us, saying: Mubarak ibn Fadalah informed me, from al-Hasan, who said: ʿImran ibn Husayn informed me that a man, upon his death-bed, emancipated six of his slaves while owning no other property. The matter was referred to the Prophet ﷺ; he cast lots among them, freed two, and kept four in bondage.
Its chain is acceptable (3), and it is a clear textual proof for the legitimacy of drawing lots in such circumstances—and Allah knows best.
