Qaṭīna is a village on the island of Mayurqa (1).
He studied under Abū al-Ḥasan Muḥammad ibn Qutaybah and Abū ʿAmr al-Dānī, and he heard ḥadith from Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr and others. He had thoroughly mastered Sībawayh’s Book and was regarded as a leading authority on it. Many eminent scholars completed their training with him, while he himself was known for asceticism and self-restraint.
King Iqbāl al-Dawla al-ʿĀmirī sought to appoint him to the judiciary, but he declined. Among those who recited the Qur’an to him were ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Shafīʿ and others. He composed fine poetry (2) and possessed many other virtues. He acquired his knowledge of Arabic from Ṣāʿid (3).
He was born in 393 AH, and he began hearing ḥadith in the year seven
(1) Situated in the eastern part of al-Andalus; near it lies an island called Manurqa (spelled with an initial n). See Muʿjam al-Buldan, 5 : 246.
(2) One of his verses runs:
‘O traveller who has left the blackness of my eyes for the blackness of a heart now parted from my ribs;
Tomorrow you will be like a body while you are its soul, and it will never cease moving so long as you are on the move.
I suffer a burning grief at separation: were its coolest breath to pass over solid water, it would blaze like lightning.’
