Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

His father was a client of the Azd tribe.

Abū ʿAlī left several works, among them: al-ʿUmda fī Ṣināʿat al-Shiʿr (1); the book al-Anmūdhaj (2); and al-Rasāʾil al-Fāʾiqa.

He was born in al-Masīla (3), was trained in letters, and his father taught him the craft of goldsmithing. After he began composing poetry he traveled to Qayrawān and praised its ruler. When the Arabs seized the city and sacked it, he went on to Sicily and settled in Mazara (4), where he remained until he died in 463 AH.

Another report states that he died in Dhuʾl-Qaʿda of 456 AH (5).

He also wrote Qarāḍat al-Dhahab (6) and al-Shudhūdh fīʾl-Lugha (7), the latter mentioned by Ibn Khallikān (8).

(1) Wafayat al-Aʿyan records the title as “al-ʿUmda fi Maʿrifat Sinaʿat al-Shiʿr wa-Naqdihi wa-ʿUyyubihi.” The book has been issued several times; its first printed edition appeared in Cairo in 1325 / 1907 under the title “al-ʿUmda fi Maḥāsin al-Shiʿr wa-Ādābihi wa-Naqdihi.” (2) Al-Wafi lists it as “Anmūdhaj al-Shuʿarāʾ, Shuʿarāʾ al-Qayrawān.” Ibn Rashiq arranged the work around the poets of his own age. Yaqut states that the author added an autobiography at the end and quotes part of it; see Muʿjam al-Udabāʾ 8 / 112. Haji Khalifah calls the book “al-Anmūdhaj fi al-Lugha,” a title not supported by the other sources. (3) A city in the Maghrib, also called al-Muḥammadiyya after Abu l-Qasim Muhammad b. al-Mahdi, its founder in 315 / 927 (Yaqut). (4) A town in Sicily; see Muʿjam al-Buldan 5 / 40. (5) Ibn Khallikan confirms the first opinion. The second view—advanced by Yaqut in his Muʿjam 8 / 111 and followed by al-Suyuti in Bughyat al-Wuʿāt 1 / 504—is that he died in Qayrawan. Al-Qifti, in Inbāh al-Ruāt 1 / 303, holds that he died in Mazara about 450 / 1058. (6) This short treatise was first published in Cairo (Rare Texts Series, 1926) under the title Qarasinet al-Dhahab fi Naqd Ashʿār al-Arab, and again in Tunis in 1972, edited by al-Ustadh al-Shadhili Bu Yahya. (7) The title is mis-read in Kashf al-Ẓunūn as “al-Shudhūr.” (8) For his other works see Wafayat al-Aʿyan 2 / 85 and Hadiyat al-ʿArifin 1 / 276. His verse was first gathered, together with that of Ibn Sharf, by al-Ustadh al-Maymani in al-Nutf min Shiʿr Ibn Rashiq wa-Ibn Sharf; a larger collection, expanded by Dr. ʿAbd al-Rahman Yaghi, was published by Dar al-Thaqafa, Beirut, 1962. Ihsan Abbas observes in his commentary on al-Dhakhira 4 / 2 / 597 that a sizeable portion of Ibn Rashiq’s poetry—especially many pieces cited by Ibn Bassam—still remains outside these two compilations.
